Running a game server on a VPS
The server software for most popular games is free: Mojang gives away the Minecraft server, and games such as Counter-Strike 2, Palworld, Rust and Valheim publish their dedicated servers on Steam, where you download them with Valve’s free SteamCMD tool. What you pay for is a machine that stays online around the clock, with enough memory for your world and players.
Memory is usually what decides the plan. The figures below come from each game’s own documentation; mods, plugins, big worlds and more players need more. For a full comparison with hosting at home and Minecraft Realms, see how much a game server costs.
Public game servers are frequent targets of DDoS attacks, which make the game unplayable or knock the server offline. That is why every game VPS runs in our data centre with DDoS protection.
| Minecraft: Java Edition | Java 25; Mojang’s example start command gives the server 4 GB of RAM |
|---|---|
| Counter-Strike 2 | 2 GB RAM and about 65 GB of storage |
| Palworld | 4 CPU cores and 16 GB RAM recommended |
| Rust | 12 GB of free RAM and 15 GB of disk space |
